Journalist Peter Greste has described it “troubling” that a Brisbane reporter is set to stand before the Crime and Corruption Commission in their aim to identify his confidential sources.
Mr Greste – who was imprisoned in Egypt for more than a year while working as a foreign correspondent – says the CCC is criminalising the idea of protecting the identities of anonymous sources.
Sky News Queensland Editor Peter Gleeson says the incident is a “real attack on democracy in this country,” with bodies such as the CCC in pursuit of journalists to reveal sources.Queensland was the last Australian jurisdiction to protect journalists from being prosecuted for not revealing their sources during court proceedings, with those media shield laws being passed in May this year.
Mr Gleeson said the reporter, referred to as ‘Journalist F’, received a tip-off from a police officer prior to a home raid of a murder suspect.Mr Gleeson said the journalist is set to stand before the CCC star chamber again regarding the matter. “This journalist faces up to five years jail if convicted for failing to reveal a confidential police source,” he said.
