The funeral and lying-in-state of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 cost the UK Government an estimated £161.7 million, according to figures published by the Treasury.
On 14 September, the Queen’s coffin was borne on a gun carriage from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for her lying-in-state, taking place for five days, when more than 250,000 people queued up to pay their respects.View gallery Queen Elizabeth II's funeral took place on 19 September, after her coffin was taken in a procession from the Palace of Westminster to Westminster Abbey, with members of her family processing on foot behind.
The largest cost was reported by the Home Office at £73.7 million, followed by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport and the Scottish Government . Upon the Queen's death, her son, Charles, became King - a role for which he had been preparing since the tender age of three, when she became Queen at the age of just 25, following the death of her father, George VI.
