Queen Sofia of Spain is coming to Houston in May. Here's why and what to expect
, a major digital project from Spain’s Royal Academy of History that covers more than 20,000 events in Spanish history. Known as Historia Hispanica in Spanish, the portal will be presented at an event chaired by Queen Sofia and hosted by Mayor Sylvester Turner on May 16 at the Julia Ideson Building at downtown’s Houston Public Library.
Queen Sofia is the wife of King Juan Carlos I, the former King of Spain, and mother to Felipe VI, the King of Spain. Her Majesty intends to be in Houston May 14-19 for the QSSI events. An avid foodie, she intends to dine at Houston restaurants . Houston’s wealth of Mexican and Latin restaurants, as well as its significant Spanish-speaking population, also is of interest to the royal and in keeping with her institute’s mission of sharing the contributions of Spain and Spanish speakers with the world.
A local host committee with international connections and boldface names from the city’s arts and philanthropy sectors, has been established to serve as gala ambassadors.
