Australian-born Queen Mary of Denmark is giving up a series of royal patronages, including some causes close to the hearts of Aussies. Among those are the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, a violence prevention charity named after the young sisters gunned down in the Port Arthur massacre, and a Copenhagen Zoo exhibit supporting kangaroos and Tasmanian devils.
Queen Mary of Denmark honoured with rare gift. The Danish royal family is reducing its 258 patronages to 140. King Frederik and Mary explained the decision in a statement, in which they also said royal patronages were now limited to five years before an organisation must reapply. “Throughout the centuries, The Royal House of Denmark’s patronages have supported the important work of non-profit organisations in Denmark, the Realm and beyond,” the official statement said.
