A South East Queensland 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games would deliver a $36 billion windfall for Queensland, according to the report that helped convince the government to bid for the event. 9News
The Value Proposition Assessment revealed a forecast $20 billion in tourist spending as well as $8.6 billion in increased export chances and $7.4 billion in economic benefits.
The event would essentially cost the state nothing to stage, between sponsorships, ticket sales and the $US1.8 billion in funding promised by the International Olympic Committee. It would also mean about 130,000 jobs in the lead-up and tens of thousands during and after. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has promised the benefits would be felt across the state, not just in the south east corner.
While Albion Park, the neighbouring Allan Border Oval and ANZ Stadium are the preferred sites of the main venue, the report identifies 18 of a total 43 venue options outside Brisbane, including football in Toowoomba, Cairns and Townsville, and sailing in the Whitsundays. Shadow tourism minister David Crisafulli says the Games are a "golden opportunity".
"It's a good opportunity to build the infrastructure we're going to need anyway. It provides a date, a hard and fixed time to get off our backsides and do it," he said. The government confirmed in December that it had would make an official bid to host the 2032 event later this year.
