Queensland’s exports rebounded by $16.5 billion to a total of $79.2 billion in 2021, with coal producers and the agricultural sector building new markets in Asia to replace the gap from China.

Although there were concerns about the impact of China’s hardline position on Australian exports, including coal, as well as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, coal exports from Queensland rose 35.7 per cent in 2021.New figures released by the Palaszczuk government show the state’s overall exports rebounded by 26.3 per cent, or $16.5 billion, to $79.2 billion in 2021.

“The by-product of the Chinese behaviour is the international market has kicked and producers have been some of the biggest beneficiaries of that.” Treasurer Cameron Dick said the latest results were an extra boost given the importance of trade to the Queensland economy.“The data shows that 2021 was the year our trade performance recovered and 2022 will be the year we build on that, taking Queensland’s trade performance to the next level.”

The La Nina weather conditions for the second summer in Australia – characterised by milder temperatures and wetter conditions – have also contributed to the boom in Queensland’s agricultural exports.AgForce chief executive Michael Guerin said that similar to what happened with coal exports, new markets had emerged for produce such as red meat, seafood and grains, which had been destined for China.
