Over 800mm of rain fell across the region over the weekend, prompting warnings of flash flooding and dangerous conditions. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts continued heavy rainfall , potentially leading to further deluges, between Cowley Beach and Giru, extending inland to the far eastern Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders.
Isolated areas could receive up to 200mm of rain in six hours, with a possible 300mm over 24 hours. \Emergency warnings were issued for the coastal town of Cardwell, urging residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to higher ground. Authorities warned of dangerous flooding and the potential threat to life and property. Strong winds averaging 55km/h to 65km/h, with gusts up to 90km/h, are also expected in the islands and coastal fringe between Cardwell and Giru. \Flooding has severely impacted infrastructure, shutting parts of the Bruce Highway between Ingham and Townsville. The Herbert River at Ingham reached a height of 14.78m, nearing the 1967 record of 15.2m. Despite the receding water levels, more rain is predicted for the area. A tragic incident occurred in Ingham yesterday, where a woman lost her life after an SES rescue boat capsized while navigating through flooded waters. Townsville residents are bracing for further flooding after experiencing a significant downpour over the weekend. Evacuation centers are at capacity with residents from 1700 properties in low-lying areas of the Ross River anxiously awaiting further developments
