Queensland's Conservation Council and the Pew Charitable Trusts said $135 million dollars a year was needed to buy enough wilderness areas and pay private landholders to protect them.The Queensland Conservation Council's Andrew Picone says more money is needed. "For the first time we have national park-level protection for private land so that's a very high level of protection and that is an Australian first," Mr Picone said."It's about time we had some serious investment in this, so I think it sets a momentum and direction that's really important," the association's president Susanne Cooper said.
