Queensland's new health director-general, Dr. David Rosengren, acknowledges the growing need for healthcare professionals in the state. He plans to explore innovative workforce models, including expanding the roles of physician assistants, paramedics, and community providers, to ensure safe and accessible healthcare as the population ages.

Queensland public hospitals may have to rely more on roles such as physician assistants to meet the growing health needs of the community, the state's new health director-general says.

He agreed this could include expanding the role of paramedics, and a greater role for physician assistants. The physician assistant role was established in the US in the 1960s to address health care disparities in rural and remote areas. The role also exists in other countries including Canada and the Netherlands.Small numbers are employed in the Australian setting, where the typical physician assistant has completed a master's degree as part of an accredited program, including clinical placements.

Asked specifically about maternity, Dr Rosengren said the workforce challenges mirrored those "in every one of our specialties". Dr Rosengren said the money budgeted for that scheme would be redirected into different approaches to attract health workers to Queensland, particularly to rural and remote areas.
