Queensland Members of Parliament will receive a new allowance of up to $6,500 for home security measures following a rise in threats. The allowance can be used to install, repair, or upgrade home security systems, such as CCTV, security screens, or lighting, as recommended by Queensland Police or a security adviser. Clerk of the Parliament Neil Laurie said there had been an uptick in danger to members, spurred in part by the pandemic.
'We have seen, not only around the world and in Australia but also in Queensland, increasing threats to people, at their offices, in the community and their personal environments,' he said. 'COVID and beyond has been a particular catalyst. Mr Laurie pointed to international incidents, including the murder of veteran British MP David Amess, as examples. 'It's not just an Australian-wide phenomenon, but it's a global phenomenon of security risk increase to members of parliament,' he said. 'In the UK, it's become really bad, where there's been some MPs that have been killed in the streets. I can't and won't go into detail here, but there's certainly been an uptick here, and there's certainly been some very disturbing instances.' Premier, ministers, the speaker of parliament, and the opposition leader already receive a security allowance. The Tribunal concluded home security measures would minimize the potential safety and security risks associated with members carrying out their role, functions, and responsibilities in and for their electorate,' Mr Laurie said. Mr Laurie referred to guidance released last month from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, noting the increased danger legislators were privy to. 'Sadly, Parliamentarians, officials, and other people in public life are facing a rising tide of abuse, intimidation, and violence,' the guide stated. 'Parliamentarians are particularly vulnerable because their public-facing role requires them to be visible and accessible in both the physical and virtual domains.' It noted while heads of state could be afforded specialist security details, this wasn't possible for each individual, recommending a suite of more accessible options
