Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll has announced she will step down from the top job in days after speculation she could opt not to push for a contract extension. Carroll's contract comes to an end in July, but she announced today she would wrap up her time in the role next Friday.
"Since the start of the year, I've had candid conversations with my husband, with my children, who have been unbelievably supportive, every step of the way," she said.Katarina Carroll announces her resignation as Queensland Police Commissioner. "I made this decision and was going to have the discussion about not renewing my contract with the minister in about two weeks' time, but because of the heightened speculation and commentary, I brought these discussions forward.""It has been the most incredible and rewarding journey I could have ever asked for," she said.Premier Steven Miles thanked Carroll for her long service to Queensland.Carroll is the first woman to serve in the role. Carroll has been under pressure on multiple issues including police staff shortages, escalating domestic violence issues, and the growing outcry on youth crime. She said today the demands on police had "skyrocketed", acknowledging increases in youth crime, domestic violence, and mental health issues since the COVID-19 pandemic. Carroll previously told 9News last night conversations over her potential contract renewal would start soon."I'm seriously considering my options and one is not asking for an extension now," she said.Carroll has been the Queensland Police Commissioner since 2019, and is the first woman to serve in the role.
