Premier Steven Miles has conceded his government is heading for defeat after the latest poll result delivered bad news ahead of the October state election.
If there was any doubt a quasi- state election campaign was underway in Queensland, all you had to do was look at the premier's schedule this week.
Steven Miles and Steve Gollschewski made announcements about deploying extra police resources to Cairns and the Far North this week. While the state government spent the week setting the agenda, it hit turbulence towards the end with questions over the premier and his travelling party's use of government-chartered jets.
The poll of 1,092 voters surveyed between April 9 and 17 found Labor's primary vote had fallen to 27 per cent, down from 39.1 per cent when Annastacia Palaszczuk won a third term in 2020. It could be seen that Mr Miles is changing strategy, heaping more pressure on the LNP to detail its policies and paint the party as a risky choice.
"We already have approaching 30 candidates and it's six months to go, so that's more in the field than we've ever seen."Some inside the LNP camp are remaining cautious, and have privately questioned whether the small target strategy will be enough to get the party over the line.
