Dr John Gerrard will begin his new role as Queensland's Chief Health Officer on Monday as fully vaccinated travellers are welcomed back into the state without having to quarantine.
Dr Gerrard, who will begin his new role on his 60th birthday, replaces Dr Jeannette Young who became the Governor of Queensland last month.
“As we enter this new stage of the pandemic it is vital to have someone of Dr Gerard’s high standing as our Chief Health Officer,” she said. Dr Gerrard's starting date will coincide with Queensland’s border reopening for fully vaccinated travellers, which he believes will bring a surge of coronavirus cases.“We’re already seeing them, and as we open up they will become more common, and eventually this will lead to a surge in cases.
