Several videos posted online show the meteor plummeting to the ground, with people in Townsville reporting a loud bang and a green, then orange, glow light up the sky on Saturday night. Read more here:

Queenslanders have reported seeing a meteor fall from the sky, causing a sonic boom and a bright glow as it entered the atmosphere.

Astrophysicist and University of Queensland professor Tamara Davis said it may have been a “rogue” meteor, meaning it had not been predicted by experts. “There were some reports of people hearing a sonic boom as well, which is what you would get when you have a meteor going through the atmosphere because they come in faster than the speed of sound. What is believed to be a meteor lights up the Queensland sky on Saturday night.Davis said people would be able to see meteors every night if they were looking at a really dark sky.

“The one that we saw would have to be smaller than that, but it still looked pretty substantial,” Davis said.
