The $22m funding will be used to create 15 new biosecurity roles. 9News

government will today unveil a $22 million package to tackle biosecurity threats such as foot-and-mouth and lumpy skin disease.

The funding will be used to create 15 new biosecurity roles including 10 specially-trained biosecurity officers to be tasked to the regions. The announcement comes as livestock producers converge on the state's annual agricultural show, the Ekka, in Brisbane, which returns this year after being cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Around 1300 head of cattle are expected to attend the show, with additional biosecurity measures in place in light of the new threat.

The contagious livestock disease was identified in Indonesia earlier this year; the closest it's been to Australia in over 100 years.
