A warning the next story contains distressing content. Questions are growing over Tennessee's lethal injection procedures after death row inmate Christa Pike survived an attempt to execute her. The 50-year-old remains in a critical condition in hospital after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. Professor of anaesthesiology and surgery Dr Joel Zivot says the execution reached a point authorities hadn't planned for.
"If the first chemical injection fails to do so, then the protocol, you know, requires that a second equivalent quantity of pentobarbital is injected into the other, intravenous catheter, and that's expected to cause death if the first one fails. In this case, you know, both of those things were done and the execution failed. There is no Plan B if that Plan A does not work.
" Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has halted further executions and ordered an independent review into what went wrong. India's Ministry of External Affairs says the pilot who was allegedly attacked during a Flydubai flight to Israel has been moved to Abu Dhabi for further treatment. The pilot, identified as Indian man Smit Machchhar is in good health and recovering well, according to India's Embassy in the United Arab Emirates.
An investigation is ongoing, but Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry says initial findings indicate the co-pilot assaulted the pilot mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in the Saudi city of Tabuk. First hand accounts and footage filmed by passengers continue to emerge, including this video Miriam Ohayon sent to her mother.
"The pilot didn't say but I feel i need to film it. We are on a flight. Mummy, there are terrifying screams. They are saying there was a stabbing.
It will be okay, it will be okay, it will be okay, it will be okay.
" The eSafety Commission is asking the providers of some of the world's most popular online games to strengthen protections for minors. The commission has identified risks to under 16 year-olds on the platforms, including child sexual exploitation and violent extremist content, as well as activity that can contribute to radicalisation.
A new report, published by the eSafety Commission today ], examines information provided under compulsory notices issued to the providers of Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite and Steam, which compelled them to explain how they protected users from serious harms*. eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman-Grant, tells Channel 9's TODAY program the report's findings reveal more must be done to safeguard child users of the games.
"Primary demographic are 8 to 13 year-olds. So if you are a predator, whether you are a violent extremist or you're grooming for sexual purposes, you are going to go to the digital playgrounds where children are. And what we have found is the protections of child accounts are not on by default.
" The Federal Government is spending $12.3 million on six projects linked to A-I and technology, as it continues a push to capitalise on the global generative AI boom. Sydney-based Silicon Quantum Computing will receive almost a quarter of the funding - $3.6 million - to expand the development of its quantum-enhanced artificial intelligence processor with Schneider Electric.
Silicon Quantum Computing CEO Michelle Simmons says quantum computing has made energy distribution up to 40 per cent more efficient than classical computing - and this second round of government funding will drive new innovations.
"So what does this mean? It basically means that now we can start to optimise the energy network as a distributed energy resource system that Schneider looks at. And we are going to be basically looking at bringing in solar energy more efficiently and reducing the cost of energy to the customer.
" The much-loved K Set train fleet will make its final timetabled passenger run today in Sydney before retiring from regular operations. The last run will head north to Hornsby before returning to the city and terminating at Olympic Park. The final journey follows the K Set’s farewell tour, which was paused on Thursday morning following safety concerns earlier in the week.
The Koori Knockout is getting underway in the Hunter, bringing together communities from across New South Wales for a weekend of fierce competition. For the teams competing, winning the Knockout means more than just taking home the trophy, it also earns them hosting rights for the following year.
