SANDAG is looking for the best way to move the train tracks off the cliffs in Del Mar, so the agency has proposed the construction of a tunnel that would run underneath the center of the city.
“I live on the hill. I own my home there; I’ve been there for a very long time. I’ve lived in Del Mar since 1970. Our hill is a very beloved location,” said Del Mar resident JoAnne Petrilli.
“It makes no sense to run a tunnel through what is soft soil to begin with. We’ve had landslides here in Del Mar, I think everybody knows that. And the property values are such that a lot of the homeowners, this is their biggest asset,” Del Mar resident Monica Meredith said. The agency’s proposal states the projected construction would begin in 2028, with the tunnel opening to the public in 2035.
