As NSW authorities race to stop the deadly varroa mite from wiping out the country’s European honey bees, Queensland has announced it will shut its borders to bees, hives and related equipment and products.
More than 600 hives have been destroyed, with the number likely to increase in the coming days
“Biosecurity Queensland is taking this action to protect the state’s bee industry from varroa mites which pose a serious risk to honey production and pollination services,” Furner said. “NSW has taken swift action to restrict the spread of varroa mite, however if control measures fail and varroa mite enters Queensland, there are limited options for eradicating varroa mite.”
“I want to be clear that the expansion of the biosecurity zones is no cause for alarm, but actually shows the surveillance system is doing its job to stay on top of where this parasite is hiding,” Saunders said.“The best path forward is to report the locations of potentially impacted hives to aid our response, so we have all the information we need to deal with this as swiftly as possible.”
She is hoping to find out if there are any options other than destruction. If worse comes to worst, Tot said she would be devastated.
