With a worldwide shortage of monkeypox vaccines, Australian experts say each dose can safely be split five ways to prevent infection.

A race has begun in Australia to vaccinate gay and bisexual men against monkeypox, before summer when the party season begins as Victoria confirms 59 cases in the state, an increase of 20 in a week.

Professor Grulich is head of the HIV Epidemiology/Prevention Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney, and said that, while people engaged in heterosexual or lesbian sex had just as much skin contact, it’s thought the spread of monkeypox has more to do with multiple partners and male homosexual sex, with a substantial proportion of men getting a rectal form of the disease.

For pre-exposure, it can be split in five and injected intradermally, but this is not recommended for those who are “severely” immunocompromised. Fractional dosing, however, has been used in other outbreaks, such as yellow fever, and there are ways to work around the issues. Training would be necessary.

“Canada had excess Jynneos vaccines in its national stockpile, in case of a smallpox terrorism event. Australia has stockpiled the second-generation vaccine, Acam2000 , but we don’t want to give it to large populations because it can have severe side effects in some people. “It would be optimum because many will be from lower income countries that are not supplying monkeypox vaccines because they are expensive, and their health systems are not set up to do so,” Professor Grulich said. “Like COVID-19, we can’t control monkeypox globally until we have a vaccine globally, so vaccine equity is essential.”
