Rafael Nadal says he is feeling better about his game and offered the tantalising prospect that this might not be his last French Open.
Rafael Nadal smiled. He joked. He sounded upbeat. He's been playing well and feeling better in practice.Oh, and then there's this little tidbit he dropped during a pre-tournament news conference Saturday: This French Open might not turn out to be the 14-time champion's last appearance, after all, at his favourite event, one he called "magical."
— he called it a "disaster" on Saturday — as to whether he would even enter the clay-court tournament in Paris at all.Rafael Nadal says he will not put a timeline on his retirement from tennis. It may come in 2024 but it could have been much sooner after his long lay-off following a hip injury. But he did show up and has been training in front of loud, supportive crowds this week.
He was the runner-up at the 2020 US Open and was at the top of his game two years ago at Roland Garros, when he took on Nadal in the semifinals but had to stop after tearing ligaments in his right ankle and was taken out of Court Philippe Chatrier with a wheelchair. He added, "I was not able to explore yet the proper way how I will be able to play, being in, again, more or less healthy conditions, playing without limitation."
