The Raiders benched Derek Carr in favor of giving Jarrett Stidham his first career start Sunday against the 49ers’ top-ranked defense.
SANTA CLARA — A stunning, quarterback switch is afoot for the 49ers’ initial visit to the Las Vegas Raiders, and it has nothing to do with Brock Purdy, who’ll make his fourth start for the NFC West-champion Niners.
“I know he’s a talented thrower,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We got to see him play before, when we played him a couple of years ago. He can make every throw, similar to Carr. He hasn’t been out there a lot, so hopefully we can confuse him.” Carr has missed only three games in nine-year career as the Raiders starter, in which he’s compiled a 63-79 record in regular-season action . This will be his first healthy scratch. The Raiders would have to guarantee Carr’s $33 million salary and $7.5 million of his 2024 pay if he got hurt in the final two games.
Stidham is no stranger to the 49ers’ coaching staff, which worked the 2019 Senior Bowl in which Stidham was offensive practice player of the week. “This is a big test,” McDaniels said in his press conference. “They’re as good as a group as we’ve played,. Te front is exceptional with Bosa, Armstead and you can go down the line. They’re very disruptive. The linebacker corps is as good as any in the league, and the cornerbacks are very opportunistic.The Raiders can be eliminated from playoff contention before Sunday’s 1:05 p.m. kickoff if the Miami Dolphins win at the New England Patriots to secure the AFC’s final wild-card spot.
