INGLEWOOD – As the question was raised, about cornerback Derion Kendrick and the back-to-back penalties that put the Philadelphia Eagles on the goal line, just as his back-to-back penalties had done for the 49ers three weeks earlier, Rams head coach Sean McVay interrupted.
Through the first five weeks of the season, he’s matched up with the likes of D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and, on Sunday, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. And among players who have played four or more games, Kendrick ranks sixth in the league in reception percentage allowed, per Pro Football Focus. When quarterbacks try to throw to receivers covered by Kendrick, the corner allows a reception just 45% of the time.
The Eagles faced third-and-1 from their own 34 with 16 seconds left in the first half. Kendrick lined up across from Brown, separated by just 3 yards expecting a short route given the situation. But Kendrick compounded that strategic mistake with a horse-collar tackle, adding 15 yards to the end of the big gain. The next play, he was called for PI in the end zone, going over the top of Brown and putting the Eagles on the Rams 1.
The sequence was a perfect mirror to the second half against San Francisco, when a face mask and PI by Kendrick moved the Niners to the goal line for a QB sneak touchdown.
