The sides regularly met in finals in the late 1980s and early 1990s but it's now will compete for a trophy for the first time in 23 years next month.
Rangers and Aberdeen will battle it out for the first piece of silverware of the season - the first final between the clubs for 23 YEARS.
Rangers and Aberdeen battled out a trilogy of epic League Cup finals in the late 1980s. The Ibrox side won a penalty shoot-out after the sides shared six goals after extra time in 1987 before the Light Blues won by the odd goal in five the following season but Alex Smith’s Dons made it third time lucky in 1989 thanks to a Paul Mason double with his winner coming in extra time.
But they didn’t meet again a final for another seven years - and that remains the last time they clashed in the final. However, there was enough drama in that Scottish Cup final to last the two decades that have passed. An outfield had never before been forced to pull on the gloves and neither have they since that eventful afternoon. With his oversized goalie top and gloves, Winters was forced to pick the ball out of the net four times as Dick Advocaat’s men secured their fifth trophy out of six under the Dutchman. Hampden was a sea of orange to mark the occasion in tribute to the manager and the rest of his contingent from Holland.
