The much-anticipated, even historic, matchup of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, a pair of sure-fire Hall of Famers, didn’t exactly live up to the hype...
. Same guys who roared back time and again, scoring in droves, sending six players to the All-Star Game, and raising the dormant hopes of a long-suffering fan base.
The difference now, in the wilting days of a once-vibrant season is this: Four regulars have regressed to the mean after career-year performances. Adolis Garcia, who injured his right knee Wednesday attempting to bring back Michael Brantley’s home run in the third, looks mentally and physically exhausted. Those muscles are apparently heavy. All the burgeoning power this summer also covered up the fact that the Rangers aren’t very good at the little things, either.
How perfect, then, that in a game in which the Rangers trailed hopelessly, Chapman pitched a perfect eighth Wednesday? Frankly, I can’t tell if the bullpen has caved in when under pressure or if most of the relievers are merely incompetent, not that it makes any difference. What I do know is that from here on out, Young should adopt an open-door policy. Bring up Lee and Church and give ‘em a shot. Same goes forGive the kids a soft landing against Oakland over the weekend. See if they’ve got anything. What could it hurt? The current alternatives played out this week, and there’s no unseeing that.
