He took a no-hitter into the fifth, but Ryan Mountcastle led the frame off with a double to left-center field. No Orioles player had registered an exit velocity greater than 82.8 mph prior to that. DeGrom then walked Terrin Vavra, and Mountcastle scored on an Austin Hays groundout that was bobbled by Marcus Semien. Adam Frazier drove Vavra in with a single to left field to tie the game at 2-2.

It took deGrom 41 pitches to get through the fifth and sixth innings alone, and he worked his way into full-count at bats against Adley Rutschman and Anthony Santander in the top of the sixth. He walked Rutschman, but he struck out Santander and catcher Jonah Heim threw out Rutschman attempting to steal second. He struck out Mountcastle on a 99 mph fastball to end the inning.

Rangers third baseman Josh Jung homered in the bottom of the sixth inning before reliever Will Smith replaced deGrom in the seventh, setting deGrom in line for his first Rangers win once the bullpen closed the door.
