Scherzer pitched the equivalent of four innings in his simulated game on Wednesday. Rangers officials came away from that “very encouraged,” according to pitching coach Mike Maddux. Scherzer, 39, has 27 postseason appearances, including 22 starts, totaling 133.1 innings. He ranks third among active pitchers in both postseason starts and innings behind Justin Verlander and Clayton Kershaw. Scherzer made one postseason start last season with the New York Mets, allowing San Diego seven runs, including four homers, in 4.2 innings.Evan Grant
