Nevertheless, Eovaldi limited the use of the fastball as the game progressed Sunday. In the sixth, facing the lineup for a third time, he threw the fastball just twice in 17 pitches. He left a 93.6 mph fastball over the bottom third of the strike zone to Harrison Bader with one out. Bader lasered it into a double at 106.8 mph, the hardest-hit ball Eovaldi allowed all day.Advertisement
A year ago, with Boston, Eovaldi saw a sudden drop in velocity in June, as well. Two starts later, he ended up on the IL. He battled back and shoulder inflammation over the second half of the year, which impacted his velocity. He said neither of those issues is at the heart of this year’s velocity drop. But, he acknowledged, it’s not unreasonable to expect some level of “leakage” in velocity over the course of a season.
Despite the drop against Chicago, the Rangers still decided to use him on four days of rest to get him into the Yankees series when keeping him in turn would have given him an extra day of rest and had him start Monday against Detroit.
. Eovaldi is tentatively scheduled to start again Friday against Houston in the opener of a four-game series.
