'The league has adjusted to us a little and we have to adjust back,' Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said.
“I think we can be good [against the fastball], but I don’t think we have been lately,” manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday. “It’s about maybe shortening things up a little bit, changing your point of contact a little bit. That doesn’t mean they have to swing earlier, but we want to be ready a little bit earlier. Sometimes guys can be thinking home run and that leads to a little bit longer of a swing. And we don’t want guys doing that.
Perhaps nowhere is the process more visible than in Nathaniel Lowe’s recent at-bats. Lowe hits third in the Rangers’ order, directly behind Corey Seager. With Seager pummeling pitchers, more and more opponents are going to pitch around Seager and attack Lowe. Seager walked in six straight games heading into Thursday, tying for the longest walk streak in his career. Two of those were intentional. He’s received five intentional walks this season, three of them in the last 10 days.
But the Rangers need to hit fastballs at the moment. So Lowe has opened up his stance into something more traditional for left-handed pull-power hitters. The idea isn’t necessarily to hit more homers, but to see the ball better out of pitchers’ hands and to commit to swinging earlier. “I’ve just got to see it better,” said Lowe, who has gradually widened the stance over the course of the month. “On the last homestand, I missed some opportunities. For this team to be its best, I’ve got to drive the ball. If they are going to walk Corey, I’ve got to be able to cash in. I didn’t do that against [the Los Angeles Angels] at home.
