And then it becomes all about the things for which spring training is important: the smell of the grass, the beauty of the early-morning calisthenics and the athleticism of pitchers fielding practice.The romance and the curiosity are wonderful, but it’s not really about roster building. That’s what the winter is for. Teams that enter spring training with multiple decisions may leave with a roster, but rarely do they leave with suitable answers.
Welcome to Rosterology 101, a look at the Rangers’ projected Opening Day roster. Here’s our first look at the 26-man projection, along with bubble spots and close calls:: How often can Garver catch coming out of the gate after mid-summer elbow surgery? Determining that could have a ripple effect on the roster if the Rangers have to carry a third catcher early in the season. If so, the bet would be on veteran Sandy Leon, with Sam Huff going to Triple-A to catch regularly.
: The only thing to determine is who is the very occasional backup shortstop to Seager. Last year, the Rangers slid Semien back over to short, but Semien is a second baseman now. Of the utility guy candidates, Smith is the best shortstop and probably profiles most as a long-term utility guy. Mathias could get some time at DH when Garver catches or at first against the occasional lefty.: The biggest decision in camp is about left field. The Rangers hope to cobble together a platoon.
