Gordon Smith insists Rangers are about to make a high stakes gamble regardless of who they risk it all when appointing a new man in the managerial hot-seat.
"The thing about Kevin Muscat is that he has a connection with the club having been a player at Ibrox and that’s a strong positive. He knows the club and knows exactly what is involved with being a Rangers player and the huge demands which come with that. He also has knowledge of Scottish football so that’s another big box ticked but I have always had the belief that every single managerial appointment is a risk.

He said: “It was always going to take a bit longer for Rangers to identify a new manager as it’s normally the case the man in position isn’t doing that well and the writing has been on the wall for a change. The board would have taken some steps to seek out a replacement but that’s not really been the case this time as Michael Beale’s sacking was a bit of a shock.
“There will be candidates where Rangers would have to pay a fee for someone they may want to bring in, if that candidate is in a job then there will be a cost involved and that is a big factor.” “To a certain degree the endorsement of any new manager is weakened by the length of time it takes for the club to make that appointment. It appears with the case at Rangers that the candidates have already been identified, from that point of view the fans will already have in their minds who that new man is going to be from the list of candidates who have already been mentioned.
