The Saint Louis Zoo confirmed the death of the beloved mother when her herd got agitated following efforts to capture the loose dog.

Zoo officials say the female Asian elephant died shortly after her herd became agitated from a small dog running loose. Rani the Asian elephant spent more than two decades at the River’s Edge in the Saint Louis Zoo where she lived as a star.
A small stray dog found its way into the zoo on Friday afternoon, eventually winding up near the Elephant Barn, an area off-limits to the public, the St. Louis Zoo said in a statement. The dog’s presence — and the subsequent commotion to capture it — “agitated” an elephant outside the barn.While the chaos to collect the lost dog unfolded outside, Rani was in her bedroom having dinner.
