City rankings can be good for bragging rights, but it’s not always helpful to look at your neighbours to assess how you’re going at home.

That score is determined through a range of criteria, explained with varying levels of clarityWith a score of 1644.3, Brisbane was the second-highest non-European city, after 18th-ranked Minneapolis in the United States. Last year, though, Brisbane was ranked fourth. But let’s not talk about that.
So what does all this mean? Honestly, not a whole lot, other than a chance for local politicians to crow about the result.Through the end of last year and the start of 2024, this masthead worked hard to bring you the Brisbane Life Study – an assessment of our city’sThere was a natural instinct at the start of the process to compare ourselves with other Australian cities, to see where we stood compared with our southern cousins.
Every city is different. Every city has its own unique set of circumstances and challenges. While it can be fun, it is not always helpful to look over the fence at the neighbours as a way to assess how you’re going at home. That’s not to say there aren’t lessons to be learnt from looking elsewhere. Of course there are, from stunning successes to cautionary tales.Take’s annual global liveability ranking – arguably a more reputable index than IQL’s, and certainly more established – which is due to be released any day now.. But as University of the Sunshine Coast urban design lecturer Greg Mews pointed out to me as we prepared the Brisbane Life Study, that list was compiled with upwardly mobile professionals in mind.
