Shea Patterson and the Michigan offense couldn’t get the first play off in time without taking a delay of game. Jim Harbaugh was forced to call timeout, and the Nittany Lions bounced their way back to the sideline.
Some might forget that the Nittany Lions had that game in their grasp. They led by 12 with less than seven minutes to go. But that decision on fourth-and-5 — not the fourth-quarter defensive collapse — is what will be remembered in Happy Valley.With 30 seconds to go down seven points, Christian Hackenberg heaved a deep ball down Penn State’s sideline. Robinson went up over Michigan defensive back Channing Stribling and hauled in a 36-yard catch that is etched in Penn State lore.
No, this wasn’t a full-stadium Whiteout. But the student section brought the noise and set the stage for future Whiteouts. They laid the foundation for what was to become one of the best atmospheres not just in college football but all of sports.
