Ransom Canyon is an upcoming Netflix romance drama series based on the namesake series of books by American author Jodi Thomas. Set in the eponymous Texas town, the show is a contemporary Western saga that explores themes such as love, relationships, and familial bonds.
The first entry in the book series, also titled Ransom Canyon, revolves around several characters, including Staten Kirkland, a descendent of the town’s founder, reclusive Quinn O’Grady, youthful and ambitious Lucas Reyes, and troubled Yancy Grey. Speaking toin August 2022, Jinny Howe, the current head of drama series development and content acquisition at Netflix, dubbed Ransom Canyon as a blend of Virgin River and Yellowstone.
“It’s a contemporary Western romance show, just looking for more in this comfort romance space,” the executive said. “It’s a multi-generational family show set on a ranch, and we say it’s. We think that it’s going to deliver on all the romance and again it will be a really beautiful vista and setting, very escapist. It is in development in early stages, but we’re very excited about it; it feels very promising.
Dan Angel has reportedly been brought in as a producer. According to a May 2023 report published by, Laura Nava would serve as a writer on the project. The production was supposed to begin in September 2023 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but it’s possible that the Hollywood strikes hindered those plans. As of early October 2023, WGA has ended its strike, but SAG-AFTRA hasn’t.
