Then known as Raquel Tejada, the actress played one of her first professional roles in the iconic outdoor pageant.
A two-time beauty pageant winner from La Jolla, she was then a drama major at San Diego State College. Welch starred in the play staged at the Ramona Bowl Amphitheatre nestled in the hills. She portrayed Ramona, who is half-Indian and half-Spanish, and falls in love with Alessandro, a Native American. The tragic love story is based on the novel by Helen Hunt Jackson.

She journeyed to Hemet in 2009 to appear at a performance and mark the 50th anniversary of her starring turn. Welch introduced the final show of that year’s season, telling the audience she was 18 at the time, newly married and pregnant with morning sickness.
