China's last female Yangtze giant softshell turtle has died. Now, only three remain in the world.

A female member of the world's rarest turtle species has died at a zoo in southern China.The state-run People's Daily reports the female turtle was 90-years-old and was the subject of five artificial inseminations at its home in Suzhou Zoo.Visual China Group

The zoo also hosts a male Yangtze giant softshell turtle. The other two of the species live in Vietnam, but their genders are unknown. Yangtze giant softshell turtles originated in China, and once made homes in the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake. The world's rarest turtle, Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle, saw one more death at Suzhou Zoo, E.China's Jiangsu on Sat. The death of the only known female in China increases the extinction risk of the species, whose population now drops to three .
