Rare footage from the ABC’s archives shows a pivotal chapter in the story of Jimmy the Chimp, who went from a Mozambique jungle to Australia, via Hollywood.
"How did he get into this situation?The 1956 Dark Venture movie is one of Mr Calvert's classics.It was amidst the post-World War II economic boom that Calvert purchased the yacht the Sea Fox and prepared to take his magic and animal show to the world, with Jimmy the Chimp one of the star attractions.
"I think [Jimmy] was probably a pet and a friend, but obviously he was also a great way to promote a show and [John Calvert] put out the story that Jimmy was Cheetah out of Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies and everyone believed that," Mr Hubber said.But the Sea Fox was ill-prepared for the voyage and was badly in need of repairs when it sailed into Darwin Harbour around June 1959.
