Plants previously thought extinct in Northamptonshire have been discovered at the University of Northampton's new campus in the town centre. One plant has not been seen in the county for nearly 70 years.
Since then, a number of rare plant species have sprouted up around the campus. Amongst the rarest include: Brian is delighted to have found so many species thought to be gone for good. "When I discovered the Small-flowered Catchfly, it was a little out of the blue," he said, "and had me jumping up and down with happiness!"
Over-reliance on herbicides and pesticides, under- or over-management of the environment and climate change are creating a "perfect storm" that make it harder for plants to prosper, according to Brian. He also fears a decreasing interest in botanical issues is not helping.
