The rare nature of burns from volcanic eruptions is presenting challenges for teams of experts treating the victims of the White Island eruption, the head of a Sydney burns unit has said.
A survivor of the volcano eruption being removed on a stretcher from a RAAF Hercules at Sydney Airport on Thursday.Director of Concord Hosptial's burns unit Dr Peter Haertsch said the five patients there had burn injuries which ranged from 7 per cent to65 per cent of their body. Dr Haertsch said the full extent of the patients' respiratory injuries would not become apparent for days.
