Man Utd produced another Jekyll and Hyde performance to draw 2-2 with Liverpool on a day when Sir Jim Ratcliffe was watching on at Old Trafford.
Who are the real Manchester United? The passive, passionless side who stuttered through the first half of this game at Old Trafford without laying a glove on Liverpool, or the team who suddenly found some intensity and some ambition after the break?
For the third game in a row, they conceded more than 28 shots on their goal. Somehow they drew two of them and only lost their third from a position of strength deep into stoppage time. It can't be sustainable, but Ten Hag keeps pulling rabbits out of the hat to suggest maybe, just maybe, he can find a way out of this malaise.
This was the first time United had been back at Old Trafford since that unforgettable Sunday afternoon three weeks ago, when Liverpool's quadruple dreams were smashed in an FA Cup tie for the ages. You could have marked it down as a turning point in United's season, had we not already had any number of false dawns this season.
United's players' retreat down the tunnel was greeted with a roar of encouragement because somehow they were still in a game that they should have been out of. Time and again in that first half, Liverpool played through them with ease. On the balance of play, it felt inconceivable that United would get back into the game, but regular watchers of Ten Hag's team knew it was possible. The level of United's play is as changeable as the Manchester weather. This game started in pouring rain and ended in spring sunshine. So United started out as a shambles and ended it if not as Liverpool's equals, then at least as a realistic threat to Klopp's men.
