The orchestra behind the Star Wars and Indiana Jones soundtracks will bring 114 musicians for its first visit in nine years, under revered conductor Sir Simon Rattle.

However, Opera House chief executive Louise Herron expected box office sales would also help the LSO tour break even or better. The 7500 tickets available for its Concert Hall recitals were likely to be snapped up, she said, based on her experience of the LSO’s 2014 tour and the capacity crowds that greeted the Staatskapelle Berlin under conductor Daniel Barenboim in 2018.“The only time these major orchestra tours don’t sell out is when their home city isn’t in the name,” Ms Herron said.

“If we’d called the Royal Concertgebuow [which toured in 2013] the ‘Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra’ we’d have sold more tickets.” Melbourne Symphony Orchestra managing director Sophie Galaise did not view the co-sponsoring of another orchestra’s concerts as cannibalising the audience for her own. When LSO managing director Kathryn McDowell approached her just before the pandemic about supporting a visit, Ms Galaise agreed immediately. The tour will cap Sir Simon Rattle’s tenth and final season as symphony leader.

“Their two nights in Brisbane this time will be a massive driver of tourism into the city, but we also see it as an investment in our audience,” he said. “We all think our Queensland Symphony Orchestra musicians are fantastic, but how do we know unless we hear the sound of another great orchestra?”
