Beaches in Long Beach, San Pedro, Palos Verdes and Seal Beach remain shuttered on New Year’s Day

Workers have stopped the raw sewage flow from a broken pipeline Friday evening, Dec. 31, but some Los Angeles and Orange county beaches where the estimated six to seven million gallons spilled into the ocean downstream remain closed Saturday, Jan. 1.

The release of millions of gallons of untreated sewage into the Dominguez Channel in Carson, seen Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, has forced the closures of some beaches. “We made good progress there, we’re hoping to have that blockage cleared some time today,” he said. “That sewer capacity will be restored and that will give us additional ability to handle the flow.”“At a minimum, we have enough things installed to manage the flow in the sewer so we don’t have any more backups,” he said.

The damaged pipe is part of 1,400 miles of sewage lines throughout the city, and programs are in place to monitor the systems for signs of aging, he said. “We hope we have enough, we have crews out there monitoring today and we’ll see how it goes,” Langpap said.
