Deputy leader Ms Rayner tipped by some to take over Ms Nandy's Levelling Up brief.
One source claimed Sir Keir’s team wanted to give Ms Rayner a more substantial brief without creating too much pressure on spending, with Ms Reeves and her shadow Treasury team keeping tight control of commitments.
Sir Keir attempted to reshuffle his deputy – also shadow minister for the Cabinet Office – in 2021 by removing her as party chair and campaign co-ordinator. But he ended up scrabbling to offer her new positions of shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Secretary of State for the Future of Work, with the tussle characterised at the time as a power struggle between the two – which ultimately Ms Rayner won.“A lot of the briefing about Ms Nandy is about laying the groundwork for Ange, to manufacture a reason why she is not doing well enough so you can justify moving her so you can sort the Ange problem without admitting it’s a problem.
