Tampa Bay Rays draw smallest crowds of season against Astros
. Those are the Rays’ two lowest crowd figures for the season. Part of that is due to this being the first Monday-Wednesday series they’ve played that wasn’t against the Red Sox, who draw big crowds everywhere they go.
When the upper deck is closed, as it is for much of the season, Tropicana Field’s capacity is 25,000. The team announced it will open the upper deck when the Yankees visit in two weeks. By contrast, the Astros are sixth in the league in attendance, averaging 37,261 fans per game. They’ve only had one game so far this season — a Monday night loss to the Tigers — that drew fewer than 30,000 fans.
Fans in Florida have often complained about Tropicana Field, which was built in 1990, two years before the opening of Baltimore's Camden Yards, which triggered the rebirth of innovative new baseball stadiums around the country. The ballpark also is located in St. Petersburg, across the bridge from the more populous Tampa.
