Already a subscriber?Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ plan to create a specialist monetary policy board at the Reserve Bank is dead after the government ruled out working with the Greens, who demanded an interest rate cut in exchange for their support.
“I just think the Greens are out of control at the moment, full of self-importance and out seeking a populist approach to everything. It’s crazy what they’re saying to us,” Senator Gallagher told ABC Radio. over the creation of the governance and monetary policy boards, the signature recommendation of an independent review into the central bank last year.
The review argued that a specialist interest rate-setting board would bring the RBA closer to global best practice.
