Already a subscriber?Liberal MP Garth Hamilton is urging his party to end its standoff with Treasurer Jim Chalmers over the looming restructure of the Reserve Bank of Australia, breaking ranks to call on shadow treasurer Angus Taylor to drop his objection to new RBA board appointments.
Nationals senator Matt Canavan said, “I just don’t see what the world needs is more board directors”. However, Senator Canavan will vote with the Coalition on the legislation in the Senate when it eventually comes to a vote. But Mr Hamilton, who represents the rural seat of Groom in southern Queensland, said the government of the day had the right to make a new appointment to the interest rate setting board.
