AFL: First Crack takes aim at the Port Adelaide midfield, with some damning vision that shows they don't defend as hard as they attack
An investigation by Sport Integrity Australia has cleared the AFL of any breaches of the WADA code, yet has recommended an overhaul of its illicit drugs policy after allegations made in federal parliament that clubs were conducting off-the- books drugs tests.
The probe was launched after federal independent MP Andrew Wilkie used parliamentary privilege to allege that AFL players known to have used illicit drugs were being left out of games, under the guise of injuries, to protect them from testing positive on match day.Those positive tests would have been in breach of the WADA code governing performance-enhancing drugs and possibly incurred lengthy suspensions.
The anti-doping agency was critical of the AFL’s testing model, and said there were “key issues” around the “threat posed by criminal infiltration of sport”. It said the issue of illicit drug use presented a significant challenge to Australian sport, not just the AFL.
