The long-running series in which readers answer other readers’ questions on subjects ranging from trivial flights of fancy to profound scientific and philosophical concepts
Is there such a thing as “good” or “bad” art? Ultimately, isn’t it in the eye of the beholder? What keeps bugging me is why the value of a painting, or an artwork in general, is decided by the signature at the bottom, rather than by what it expresses.said: “Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible.” To me, this means that good art is a gateway to seeing something new in the world.
To take another example, it is hard to find artists capable of getting to the heart of what it means to be an animal. Most paintings are twee, or strongly photographic, or stereotypical. In my view,, working more than 100 years ago, was one of the few artists able to get at the soul of a wild thing. There’s an old definition that I find helpful: great art transcends its material. It works for me because it’s not particularly culture- or medium-specific.
