SAN FRANCISCO — With the release of their Opening Day roster Thursday morning, the Giants finalized the group of players that will begin the defense of their 107 wins and National League West title a year ago.
With rosters expanded to 28 for the first month of the season, the Giants opted to carry 15 pitches and 13 position players, allowing them to keep all the pitchers at the edge of the bullpen on their roster, including former first-round pick Tyler Beede, who is out of options. La Stella’s status on the injured list provided the Giants another roster spot and came as a mild surprise, despite the expectation after offseason surgery being that he wouldn’t be ready for the start of the season. But La Stella reported to camp ahead of schedule in his rehab from the procedure and had appeared in two Cactus League games. After playing second base for the first time, though, La Stella did not appear in another game and was still dealing with lingering soreness.
For now, these are the 28 who will open the season with the Giants. However, they will again be counting on contributions from many more players over the grind of the 162-game season. On their way to 107 wins last year, the Giants used 54 players.
