NSW Police have launched an urgent appeal for assistance after 27 handguns were stolen from a museum in Lithgow , with warnings the firearms could be made operational and spread across the state for use in other crime.New South Wales Police have issued an urgent public plea after 27 handguns were stolen from a museum in the state's Central West, with authorities holding"real concerns" for community safety.

Police believe the handguns, which are valued at more than $200,000, could be made operational, sparking fears they could be used in further crime and put the public at risk of harm. Picture: NSW Police Several hours later, at about 5:25am, police were called to Stockland Drive, Bathurst, where they found the Landcruiser set ablaze.

Crime scenes were then established at both locations, and detectives from State Crime Command's Drug and Firearms Squad established a strike force to investigate the incident. "This crime has links to multiple regions of the state so there are real concerns these firearms could also be spread across NSW," he said.
